The present lot represents the busy Ognissanti Canal traversed by the narrow Trevisan bridge. It is animated with a number of rapidly-painted figures on the bridge and along the canal.
The church of San Trovaso can be seen in the background where the artist died on 16 January 1839.
The artist was a passionate devotee of the city and its people. In the present work he celebrates the everyday lives and traditional Venetian way of life, such as people walking along a canal or travelling on gondolas.
