Venetian School, 18th Century
Interior of the Café Florian, Venice,
oil on canvas, 21 x 28 cm, framed
The present painting was formerly attributed to Jacob or Willem de Heusch. Ellis Dullaart of the RKD, The Hague, has assigned it to the circle of Frederick de Moucheron, recognising a close relationship to works by Timotheus de Graef (1647–1724). She compares it to a painting in the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, which until recently was attributed to an anonymous follower of Frederick de Moucheron, but is now considered to be a work by Timotheus de Graef. A similar landscape signed by de Graef was sold at Sotheby’s, London, on 18 April 2000 as lot 270.
