Lot No. 6

Mixed lot (2 items): Lobi, Burkina Faso: two amulet figures for children, made of yellow cast-alloy (cast brass).

Mixed lot (2 items): Lobi, Burkina Faso: two amulet figures for children, made of yellow cast-alloy (cast brass). - Tribal Art - Africa

Small, charming figures such as these, with hangers, were made from yellow cast-alloy (cast brass) in ‘waste moulds’ by the Lobi people in the south of Burkina Faso. They are ‘typically Lobi’ in their style. Ribbons were pulled through the eyelets and then these figures were hung around the necks of small children. As ‘tutelary spirit amulets’ – we would call them ‘guardian angels.’ Height: 9.5 cm and 10 cm; width: each 3.5 cm. Between c. 1900 and the first half of the 20th century. (ME)

Provenance:
Peter Loebarth Collection, Hamelin, Germany; now: Viennese private collection.
