Exhibited:
Venice, Museo Correr, Lawrence Carroll, 16 February – 4 May 2008, exh. cat. no. 37 with ill.

The “sleeping paintings“, like many of the terms used by Carroll to talk about his works, betray a sense of “humanity“that the artist acknowledges. His paintings are like living persons: spleeping, waiting, dreaming, transformed as time goes by. The changes that they undergo over time – wax turning yellow, for example – constitute essential characteristics; young people become adults, children become parents, poor people become rich or vice versa, or their personalities change, or they immigrate to other countries or alter their lifestyle. The artist is the puppeteer of an endless tale, like the stories from the Thousand and One Nights, like the child who plays with shapes in order to find – and to teach – a new and more genuine way of relating to life.
(Laura Mattioli Rossi, For a Biography of Lawrence Carroll, in “Lawrence Carroll“, catalogue of the exhibition held at Museo Correr, Venice, 2008)
