Alexis Grimou
(Argenteuil 1678–1733 Paris)
Portrait of a gentleman dressed à la Van Dyck, probably a self-portrait,
signed and(indistinctly) dated at lower right: A. Grimou f./173.,
oil on canvas, 130 x 97 cm, framed
Provenance:
Lobby of the Hotel ‘Europäischer Hof’ in Baden-Baden until 2015
The present painting is probably identical to a self-portrait by Grimou that was sold as part of the Olmade Collection at an auction in Paris in 1868 (see C. Gabillot, Alexis Grimou – Peintre Français, Paris, 1911, p. 58). A comparable composition, a portrait of Paul Poisson, was in the collection of the Comte de Fénelon, Paris, in 1911 (see C. Gabillot, op. cit., p. 39).
