Domenico Quaglio

Domenico Quaglio - 19th Century Paintings

(Schloss Hohenschwangau near Füssen 1787–1837)
View of the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Rheims, signed, dated and inscribed Dominicus Quaglio. Monachii Pinx. M.D.C.C.C.X.X.VII, oil on canvas, 53.7 x 69.5 cm, framed, (Rei)

Provenance:
Collection Dr. Georg Schäfer (1896-2005) Schweinfurt;
his auction Neumeister, Munich, 27 February 2005, lot 72.

Domenico Quaglios view depicts the west facade of the cathedral of Notre-Dame in Reims - a Masterpiece of thirteenth-century Gothic architecture. Besides the figures in the foreground scenery a procession of communicants is walking towards the church entrance.
Domenico Quaglio came from a North Italian family of artists active in Germany over eight generations. They worked as fresco painters, architects, decorators and view painters, with several, including Domenico, providing stage designs for the court theatres at Mannheim and Munich. Beyond that work Domenico should advance to the most famous member in this family of artists. He worked in the tradition of view painting of 18th century masters such as Canaletto or Bellotto and combined it with the painterly achievements of the Munich landscape specialists Georg von Dillis or Max Joseph Cartwright. Domenico Quaglio was essiantial in the rediscovery of Gothic art. His architectural views of important Gothic buildings and cities in Europe are among the most reliable documents of his time.
