The instrumental function of these spherical concave mirror objects by Adolf Luther ‘lies in the fact that they multiply a given reality and, by their powers of reflection, produce a light-like phenomenality that reaches out into the actual space in front of the materiality of the object. Vital here was the principle known to physics that images entering a concave mirror are refracted and projected back into space, albeit upside down,
as a pure energetic manifestation. This is a baffling and fascinating experience for the viewer to behold. For the artist, it was visible proof of the invisible reality of light – a proof of the reality of immaterial light in contrast to the world of matter. Licht und Materie – light and matter – the polar world picture that informed his concept of light had found here its visual expression.’(1)
