with Douwes Fine Art, Amsterdam

Views of mediterranean seaports such as the present painting are rare in the oeuvre of the Flemish painter Bonaventura Peeters. He mostly depicted ships on the Scheldt or the North Sea. The seaport shown here can most likely be identified as Tangier, which now belongs to Morocco and was under Portuguese control at the time . In the background, the Strait of Gibraltar and the Spanish coastline are discernible.
