The present painting comes with a certificate issued by J. P. De Bruyn (June 2014). This painting derives from a prototype by Rubens, several versions of which are known. Boeckhorst might have seen Rubens’s painting in the master’s workshop, where the artist worked as a young man. De Bruyn compares the present painting to a Mater Dolorosa by Boeckhorst (in gouache) at the Musée d'Art et d'Archéologie in Besancon.
