According to Pedrocco, the present painting is based on works by Jacopo da Ponte, in particular an etching by Pietro Menarola from 1685 after Bassano’s well-known painting, Saint John in the desert, originally executed for the altarpiece of Saint John the Baptist in the Church of San Francesco in Bassano (currently in the Museo Civico, Bassano)
