Japan, Meiji period or later
Mokkô form. Copper with iroe-takabori, gilt and silver. Decorated in ‘colourful relief’ on a hammered (?) ground are ‘The three vinegar testers’ (Japanese: sansu): Confucius (Kôshi), Buddha (Shakka) and Laozi (Rôshi) tasting vinegar from a cask. To reverse, a mountain landscape with inscription: Ikkansai Tomosane (active 1700-1750). Corrosion and traces of use. Height: 10.3 cm. (BA)
