A rare eight-lobed carved cinnabar lacquer dish - Asian art

China, Yuan, early Ming dynasty, 14th century

The interior eight-lobed medallion carved with a lakeside landscape with wild geese: to the left a Taihu rock on a reed-covered peninsula, on which a pair of geese have their nest, to the background, trees and shrubbery; to the foreground, on the banks of the lake, a wild goose with a plant in its beak, further right, bamboo bushes, in the sky, a wild goose in flight. The background composed of finely stylised patterns signifying air and water. The lobed cavetto carved with a composite floral scroll including lotus, plum, gardenia, peony and magnolia flowers on an ochre-coloured lacquer ground;the exterior with a deeply carved xiangcao scroll. The foot also eight-lobed, the base in brown lacquer. Warping to the wooden core; some fissures and some small parts missing to the lacquer; slight retouching to cavetto, rim and foot ring.
