A figure of a city god

A figure of a city god - Asian art

China, Ming dynasty
Bronze with traces of red paint and gilding. The deity is shown seated with his legs apart on a throne bench, wearing the garments and cap of an official, and sporting a three-pointed beard. He has a candid gaze, his hands on his upper thighs, his left hand hidden in his long sleeve. Height: 30 cm. (BA)

City gods are regarded as deities belonging to Chinese popular religion. They are known to be venerated already in the period of the Six Dynasties (420-589 AD). They had often been heroic generals, who were later deified. Their cult was fostered from the Song era (960-1279) onwards by the Imperial Court, and enjoyed great popularity, primarily during the Ming and Qing periods. It was believed that city gods decided the fate of a region and could protect it. It has been documented that, as early as the 10th century, temples to them housed sculpture and painting representing the gods and their retinue.
