A figure of the Medicine Buddha
China, Ming dynasty
Hollow-cast bronze in one piece with traces of red paint and gilding. Seated meditating in lotus position on a lotus throne, the Medicine Buddha, Chinese: Yaoshi fo, Sanskrit: Bhaishajyaguru, holds in his right hand a fruit of the myrobalan tree, from the core of which a purgative oil was harvested. Dents and a short crack to rear of throne. Height: 22.5 cm. (BA)
