Feng Zhengjie

Feng Zhengjie - Contemporary Art, Part II

(born in Sichuan Province in 1968 – lives and works in Bejing)
China Nn. 30, signed, dated Feng Zhengjie 2003, oil on canvas, 210 x 300 cm, on stretcher, (PP)

Provenance:
Galerie Suppan Contemporary, Vienna
Private Collection, Austria

Exhibition:
Vienna, Feng Zhengjie – Faces, Galerie Suppan Contemporary, 2005

[...] Elements of Neo-Pop and ironical references to political propaganda art at a critical distance from the nihilism of the Western system of values allow the oversized faces of Western-styled young Chinese women in the series “Kitsch – As A Face Of Chinese Society” by Feng Zhengjie to appear as sublime icons of a permanent identity crisis. As a sensitive painterly membrane to the outside world, the female countenance also symbolizes the responsiveness of Chinese contemporary art in its confrontation with the West. A disturbing yet fascinating ambivalence of surreality, heroisation and irony characterise Feng’s subtle painting, which has appeared in numerous international exhibitions and art fairs.
