Lot No. 242

Burma (Myanmar): A sitting Buddha made of wood, black with traces of gold lacquer. Style: Mandalay.

Burma (Myanmar): A sitting Buddha made of wood, black with traces of gold lacquer. Style: Mandalay. - Tribal Art

The Buddha sits on a simple lotus throne in the ‘earth-touching gesture’, with eyes cast downward, meditating while smiling remotely.
Carved out of wood in the popular Mandalay style, primed with black lacquer and with noticeable remnants of the original top layer of gold lacquer. The headband and ears of the Buddha, the border of his monk’s robe, as well as the flower petals on the front of the plinth are trimmed with glued, black fabric threads and partly decorated with white and green glass pieces. The Buddha’s hair consists of tiny, glued cones of black lacquer, with a round, upwardly pointing ‘ushnisha' (flame) sitting on top.
A very attractive, almost rustic sculpture, which radiates a great inner peace with its clear, simple, ‘human’ proportions.
Minor age damage on the decorations on the front of the plinth, as well as some pieces broken off on the hair and on the back of the plinth.
Late 19th century to early 20th century; H: 40 cm. (ME)
