Lot No. 157

Savonnerie,

Savonnerie, - Oriental Carpets, Textiles and Tapestries

France, c. 342 x 426 cm, second half of the 19th century. The name Savonnerie derives from a soap factory acquired by Louis XIII, where Pierre Dupont and Simon Lourdet established a royal carpet manufactory in the early 17th century. Although an Oriental influence was initially still discernible, the design gradually developed in the direction of French taste with scattered flowers, fruit and royal emblems, as is also the case of the present piece in Louis Seize style, with a coarsely knotted pattern and extremely deep pile, specific features of Savonnerie carpets include their being cross-woven and the warp threads being folded on the long sides, excellent condition with consistently deep pile.
