The present painting is by an artist from the circle of the Flemish painter Bernard van Orley and harks back to a composition invented by him (cf. M. J. Friedländer, Early Netherlandish Painting, vol. VIII, no. 137a). A less detailed version of this composition was sold at Nagel’s in Stuttgart on 22 March 2001 as lot 810.
