Barbara Krafft was taught from a very young age by her father, Johann Steiner (1725–1793), one of the most highly acclaimed portrait painters of his time. In 1786 she exhibited her first work in Vienna, became a member of the Royal and Imperial Academy of Fine Arts, and married the pharmacist Joseph Krafft. From 1780 onwards she executed many church paintings and portraits in Moravia and Prague. Between 1803 and 1821 she worked mainly in Salzburg where she completed a large number of portraits. She spent the last four years of her richly productive life in Bamberg, where she is reputed to have painted 145 portraits. Her works are held by many important museums including the Carolino Augusteum in Salzburg, the Belvedere in Vienna, and the Städel-Galerie in Frankfurt.
