The oeuvre of this artist, a controversial figure during his lifetime, includes several picturesquely dressed girls from the Campagna, works he probably executed during time spent in Italy. Born into difficult family circumstances in Vienna, in 1847 he began studying at the Vienna Academy before moving to Munich where he was taught by Wilhelm Kaulbach and the history painter Carl Rahl. After disputes with his teacher he moved to Italy, firstly to Venice and then Rome. Initially a very popular artist, he disturbed his public with his unreal colouring and the juxtaposition of contrasting image styles. The painter died in Vienna in 1889, both financially and privately a broken man.
