Workshop of Frans Francken II
(Antwerp 1581–1642)
The Triumph of Bacchus,
oil on panel, 60 x 94.4 cm, framed
Provenance:
sale, Sotheby’s, London, 16 December 1999, lot 152 (as workshop of Frans Francken II)
Frans Francken tackled the merry subject of the Triumph of Bacchus in a smaller-sized format (The Hague, Galerie S. Njistad, 1952), with the relationship among the figures and the landscape differing slightly from the present example. Frans Francken seems to have drawn his inspirations from Bacchanal with Silenus by Andrea Mantegna. He was certainly familiar with Mannerist variants of this composition, such as the drawing by Frederik Sustris.
