Hubert Schmalix *

(born 1952 in Graz)
‘Roter Boden’, on the reverse signed, dated Schmalix 79, oil on canvas, 261 x 250 cm, on stretcher, (K)

Compare:
(Schmalix), Neue Galerie Graz, Landesmuseum Joanneum, published by Hatje Cantz, 2007, p.104 + 105

Provenance:
Galerie Buchmann, Basel (label on the reverse)
From an Austrian Collection

It was always difficult to sell me as an Austrian export. I have not conformed to the ‘Austrian character’ at all. For a short time I did once try, with ‘living and dying’ pictures, but never succeeded in being wholehearted about it. So, if anything, they were allegorical decorations with references to vanitas painting.
I never had the anger for ‘actionist’ outbursts. Sex gives me more pleasure than problems…
I have always been attracted to the foreign. That doesn’t mean I constantly examine other cultures. A Giotto is as foreign to me as a Hiroshige.
I study everything and like to surround myself with books, and then I feel like a scientist. The influences in my painting stem from this activity.
