Otto Piene *

Otto Piene * - Contemporary Art - Part 1

(Bad Laasphe 1928–2014 Berlin)
Untitled, signed, dated Piene 65, fire gouache on black cardboard, 67.5 x 96 cm, framed, (PS)

Provenance:
Private Collection, Rhineland

In Otto Piene’s art, the special way in which individual colours work on the viewer replaces the complexity of colours and forms. Both in their structure and selection, the artist always avoids a classical compositional scheme. In the case of this untitled fire gouache, nuances of red as the only colour are sufficient in order to give this painting on a monochrome black cased cardboard its distinctive colour. The incorporation of an artificial light source changes the effect of the surface, which is perceived as self-luminous. The use of monochromy, which does not contrast with the painting’s colour, enhances its luminosity. (1)
