African archaeology, Niger, ‘Bura-Asinda-Sikka Culture’, 3rd-11th c. AD: A so-called ‘memorial head’ made of terracotta.
A head sculpture of the ‘Bura culture’ (cf. cat. no 8 for further details). Made of reddish baked terracotta. With oval head, coffee bean eyes, a vertical bulge in relief from the top of the head to the nose, a small mouth and ears. Sketched plaited coiffure on the top of the head and on the back. Attached to the head is a conspicuously long neck stretching down to a coarse section below, which may have been originally intended for being put in the ground. Good, age-related patina. No damage. 3rd to 11th century AD; H: 25 cm (in total), 9 cm (head). (ME)
