The present painting is an early, and probably contemporary, version of a composition by Holbein. In this version Thomas More still wears the livery collar of the Chancellor of Lancaster with a simple rose, whilst in the painting in the Frick Gallery, New York, he wears the collar of the duchies of Lancaster and York, united in 1528, with a double rose.
