Friedrich Gauermann
(Miesenbach 1807-1862 Wien)
Ox on the pasture, monogrammed F.G., backside label Galerie Heinemann München Nr. 20063, oil on panell, 18 x 21,5 cm, framed, (Rei)
Friedrich Gauermann, one of the most important animal painters of the Austrian Biedermeier period, had already developed a huge interest in agriculture at a young age, particularly in animals. His studies of the Dutch Masters, especially the works by Paulus Potter, influenced his animal paintings and affected his whole production. The animal fighting and hunting scenes as well as the fields and animal motifs were already popular and appreciated by the high society of his time and his art colleagues. Notably, the Austrian painter Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller purchased one of the artist’s works. These paintings are based on different animal- sketches, made by Friedrich Gauermann during his summer hikes.
