Lot No. 158

A rare "Frammentato" vase, designed by Dino Martens

for Pauly (Aurelio Toso), Murano, c. 1955, the freely moulded clear glass body decorated with applied glass plates in various sizes, paper label: PAULY/Martens/36598, height 38 cm. (DRAX)

A unique piece.

The form of this vase is a synthesis of Dino Marten’s "Oriente Olaf" and his "Sirventese". The pattern shows elements adopted from the "Eldorado" and "Frammentato" glasses. Dino Martens was first and foremost a painter, but for financial reasons developed elaborate artistic designs for clear glass objects for several glasshouses that were eventually produced by master gaffers in Murano. The present vase is one of these items, the making of which has been unknown to date.

Provenance:
from the estate of a Genoese family.

Lit.:
cf. M. Heiremans, Dino Martens. Muranese Glass Designer, Stuttgart 1999, p. 82, no. 61, p. 110, no. 109 (the technique) and no. 125 (for Murano); Vetri della Collezione Spanu, Olivares Editori, 2000, p. 148.
