Lot No. 123

Circle of Thomas Wyck

Circle of Thomas Wyck - Master Drawings, Prints before 1900, Watercolours, Miniatures

(1616-1677), Design for a frontispiece: An allegory of the wedding of Queen Ann of Great Britain and Prince George of Denmark, c. 1683, monogrammed "T. W.", brush and black ink, over black chalk, heightened with white, on blue prepared paper, 19,5 x 15,5 cm, mounted on support, mounted, unframed, (Sch)

Provenance:
private collection, France.

At the right side of the foreground the rivergod Tamesis is represented as an allusion to the river Thames in London; above the figures of Justice and Minerva an angel with a trombone is holding a medallion with a double portrait of of Queen Ann of Great Britain (1665-1714) and Prince George of Denmark(1653-1707) and an inscription "ANNA M(AGNA) BRIT REG(INA) GEORG P(RINCE) PS MAX." The initials „TW“ may point to the Flemish artist Thomas Wyck, who was active in England in the early 1660s until his death in 1677. The present drawing can only be done several years later, in 1683 when the wedding of the Royal couple took place. Either the drawing was executed by an artist from the circle of Thomas Wyck or it was done by an unknown monogrammist „T.W.“ who may have drawn the sheet after a print.
