Annibale Carracci

Annibale Carracci - Master Drawings, Prints before 1900, Watercolours, Miniatures

(Bologna 1560-1609 Rome) Two male figure studies, black chalk, pen and brown ink, on paper, 13,3 x 15 cm, mounted, unframed, (Sch)

Provenance:
Collection Jean de Vichet (1885-1975), Montpellier (Lugt 1549); European private collection. The attribution of the drawing based on the original was confirmed by Prof. Nicholas Turner. The figure seated on a rock in the present drawing reminds one of the figure posture in Polyphem und Galatee, one of the most famous compartiments of his rectangular oblong fresco decoration in the Galleria of the Palazzo Farnese in Rome which Annibale completed in 1600. There are also paprallels with one of the figures in "Hercules and Cacus" aboe the fire place in one of the groundfloor rooms of the Palazzo Sampieri in Bologna executed around 1593-94. Style and technic point to Annibale’s draftmanship of the late 1590s.
