English School, 18th Century - Old Master Paintings

Portrait of Sir John Coxe Hippisley, 1st Baronet, (1746–1825),
oil on canvas, 97.5 x 72.5 cm, framed

Inscribed on the scroll: Dal Vaticano 26 Aprile 1795

Sir John Coxe Hippisley, 1st Baronet (February 1746 – May 1825), was a British diplomat and politician. In 1779 he travelled to Italy where he became the British government's representative in Rome. He married his first wife Margaret Stuart in Rome in February 1780.
In 1781 Hippisley received an appointment in India as paymaster at Tanjore in 1786. He returned to England in 1789. In the following year he was returned as Member of Parliament (MP) for Sudbury.
From 1792 to 1796 he resided in Italy, and was there again engaged in negotiations with the Vatican, the effects of which were acknowledged in flattering terms by the English government. The present portrait was certainly executed during this second sojourn in Rome (see the inscription on the scroll) and was possibly intended to celebrate the good relationship that John Hippisley had with the Vatican.
In 1796 he successfully negotiated the marriage of the reigning Duke of Württemberg with the Princess Royal of England, Charlotte, eldest daughter of George III. For this service he was created a baronet on 30 April 1796. The duke granted him the privilege of bearing the ducal arms, with the motto of the order of Württemberg, Amicitiæ virtutisque fœdus. While a member of the House of Commons, Hippisley vigorously supported Roman Catholic emancipation. He retired in 1819. He was a vice president of the Literary Fund Society, one of the principal promoters of the literary institutions of Bath and Bristol, a member of the government committee of the Turkey Company, and a vice president of the West of England Agricultural Society.

The present composition relates to a painting attributed to Guy Head (1753–1800) (see B. Ford, Sir John Coxe Hippisley, An Unofficial English Envoy to the Vatican, in: Apollo. The Magazine of Arts, June 1974, p. 440–445, p. 444, fig. 5).
