Joseph Hickel attended the Viennese Academy since 1756 and specialised in portrait painting very early on. With an imperial scholarship, he embarked on extended study trips to Italy. In 1769 the academy in Florence appointed him as a member. One year later he executed a portrait of Emperor Joseph II, with which he had such great success that in 1771 he was appointed imperial court painter (Kammermaler). As Joseph II’s court painter, his style influenced the iconography of the emperor.
