Jan Brueghel II. und Frans Francken III.
Jan Brueghel II (Antwerp 1601–1678) and Frans Francken III (Antwerp 1607–1667)
A garland of flowers surrounding a medallion with Saint Bernard of Clairvaux in prayer,
oil on panel, 26.7 x 18.7 cm, framed
Provenance:
Tower Collection (19th century);
Dorotheum auction, Vienna, 31 March 2009, lot 58;
European private collection
Enclosed with this painting is a certificate by Dr Klaus Ertz (2008).
This rare example of the cooperation between Jan Brueghel II and Frans Francken III shows a medallion with the founder of the Cistercian Order in prayer against a black monochrome background that emphasis the jewel-like colours of the detailed flower wreath. The splendour and joie de vivre radiating from the different flowers elegantly braided into a sumptuous garland provide a strong contrast to the sober depiction of the saint at the centre of the painting. Such depictions nevertheless enjoyed great popularity in Antwerp during the 17th century.
Frans Francken III, with whose family the Breughel collaborated especially for the depiction of mythological scenes, proves a worthy heir to his father on the grounds of this detailed composition in a very tight, small space. An example of the cooperation between the two artists similar to the present painting is preserved in a Spanish private collection. On the grounds of the strong stylistic affinity, Dr Ertz dates the present painting to the 1630s. The deliberately highly-contrasting image is an excellent example of the successful cooperation between two gifted artists.
