Orazio De Ferrari

Orazio De Ferrari - Old Master Paintings

(Voltri 1606–1657 Genoa)
The Mocking of Christ,
oil on canvas, 124.5 x 97.5 cm, framed

Provenance:
European Private Collection We are grateful to Dr. Mary Newcome for confirming the attribution of the present painting after its examination in the original. She dates it to the late 1630s.

The present painting shows a compositional approach that is typical of Orazio de’Ferrari, with the scene in the foreground bathed in light and set off against the dark backdrop. The expressive figures are painted with a free, loose brush.

Orazio de’Ferrari came from Voltri, a suburb of Genoa, and was a student of Giovanni Andrea Ansaldo. His first documented work is the Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian from 1630 for the church of SS. Nicolò e Erasmo in Voltri. The Caravaggesque influence recognisable in his oeuvre suggests that the artist had probably travelled to Naples. He painted numerous altarpieces for churches in Genoa and later was active in Menton and Monaco, where he executed, a series of frescoes for the Palazzo Grimaldi.
