A man cutting tobacco with a woman holding his pipe,
oil on panel, 66.5 x 51 cm, framed

Provenance:
With Kaufman, London;
Private collection, United Kingdom before 1966;
sale Sotheby’s, London, 7 December 2005, lot 5 (sold for £48,000)

Werner van den Valckert was registered in 1612 as a Master in the Guild of Saint Luke, The Hague. He initially practiced in etchings, developing a highly accomplished technique, but devoted himself almost entirely to painting from 1613 onwards. This work is comparable to paintings created by van den Valckert in the 1620s, such as Suffer the little children to come unto Me (Rijksmuseum Het Catharijneconvent, Utrecht) and Caritas with the Preaching of St. John the Baptist (Rijkscollecties, The Hague).

We are grateful to Fred Meijer, RKD, for confirming the attribution following inspection of the original.
