Louis Gurlitt
(Altona 1812–1897 Naumdorf)
Lakeland Landscape with Fishing Huts and Fishing Nets, signed, dated L. Gurlitt (ligature) 1841, oil on canvas, 54 x 76 cm, framed, (Rei)
Louis Gurlitt, who grew up in humble circumstances, attended the Copenhagen Academy where he trained in landscape painting under Christoffer Willhelm Eckersberg. His birthplace Altona was then part of Danish territorial sovereignty and therefore it is unsurprising that many Northern German artists attended the academy in Copenhagen to receive their artistic education. Gurlitt’s greatest role model was the German painter Christian Morgenstern who was to influence the artist throughout his life. There is also evidence in his paintings of the impressions left by his numerous study trips. He painted true-to-life depictions of his northern landscapes, set in countries such as Norway, Denmark or Northern Germany, reproducing their typical light effects. Gurlitt immerses his landscapes in seemingly realistic sunlight, lending them their characteristically atmospheric impact.
