Baule, Ivory Coast: Fly whisk with an ape figure on its grip.
An old fly whisk of a dignitary of the Baule people. With black dyed, partly plaited leather stripes in the lower section. The round wood grip is also tightly wrapped in plaited leather bands and stitched. At the upper end of the grip sits a charming and exquisitely carved ape, on a round wood plinth, with zigzag décor in relief. The entire whisk was originally dyed black. On the visible, sculpted wood part colours appear scuffed as a result of long use. An object with very good age patina overall. About 1900 to early 20th century; L: c. 46 cm (in total), H: 13 cm (grip with ape figure). (ME)
Provenance: Henseler gallery, Munich; Viennese private collection.
