From the 1840s onwards Zötl depicted increasingly lower animal species. He classified the animals according to mammals, monkeys, birds, fish and amphibians, insects, worms and molluscs and then he started to number them on the sheet and finally created two types of pictures: a scenic and spatious picture of an animal and a scientific information panel. The quality of the latter lies in its surprising degree of abstraction which is even more impressive through the reduction of the depiction to one dominant color.
