Lot No. 161

Adrian Ludwig Richter

Adrian Ludwig Richter - Master Drawings, Prints before 1900, Watercolours, Miniatures

(Dresden 1803-1884) A landscape in June with a loving couple and a shepherd family, c. 1859, pencil and white body color, on paper, 13,6 x 20,5 cm, mounted, unframed, (Sch)

The attribution to Adrian Ludwig Richter was confirmed by Prof. Dr. Hans Joachim Neidhart in a letter of June 12, 1998.

The present drawing is related to the painting"Im Juni" (In June; a landscape in June with a rainbow) by Richter in the Staatliche Gemäldegalerie Dresden (Gal.-Nr. 2230 A). The artist executed the painting in 1859 after he had prepared it with several preliminary studies. The precise relationship between drawing and painting, however, was unclear to Prof. Neidhart. The drawing differs in certain details from the painting; the minuteness of the drawing point to a repetition with variants rather than to a design for another painting. Solutions which Richter once found in painting were varied by him in watercolors, woodcuts or etchings.
