Giovanni Gallo was a woodcut artist active in Nortern Italy and famous for his clair-obscur woodcuts after Marc Pino. The woodblock ofthe present sheet was used for colour prints; the present print, however, derives from one block in black colour; the line with the name of the painter and woodcut artists are therefore lost. Compare Cabinet des Estampes, Paris, EA 26 reserve folio E 027316 (with the inscription) and the exh.cat. "Chiaroscuro woodcuts", Colnaghi Prints Ltd., London, Oct./Nov. 1988, No. 32 (without inscription).

Provenance: A collector’s paraphe "G. Storck a Milano 1802 In A. 12591" (Lugt 2319) on the reverse.
