Josef Arnold the Elder


(Stans near Schwaz 1788-1879 Innsbruck) The Entombment of Christ, signed, dated J. Arnold p. 1842, oil on panel, 54 x 62 cm, framed, oxidation, restored, crack, (Rei) after the painting of the same name by Raffael, Rome, Galleria Borghese.

Josef Arnold: Josef Arnold the Elder attended the Vienna Academy from 1818 to 1825, studying under professors Caucig, Redl, Petter and Krafft. He travelled to Italy and this had a significant influence on his art. From 1825 onwards he worked primarily in Innsbruck where he was extremely active as church painter, dominating Tyrol’s ecclesiastic art scene for a period of two decades.
