Dr. Robert Keil, Vienna, author of the catalogue raisonné on Heinrich Friedrich Füger, has confirmed the present painting to be an autograph work by Füger. He sees a connection to the design for the old Burgtheater in Vienna dating from the mid-1790s. In terms of iconography, Füger refers to motifs he used in 1782/83 for the decoration of the library at the Palace of Caserta.
