Daniel Richter *
(born Lütjenburg in 1962) “Winterreise 1”, on the reverse titled, signed, dated D. Richter 2009, on the stretcher the work number DR/M 228, oil on canvas, 50 x 70 cm, framed, (PS)
Provenance:
Contemporary Fine Arts, Berlin (gallery stamp on the stretcher)
Daniel Richter’s recent works have been dictated by the line and the forms into which this grows. In “Winterreise I” the line is used in a painterly manner and in a range of variations to design the landscape, with the multiple, linear colour gradient reminding the viewer of the works of Edvard Munch. Into his ambivalent, artificial landscapes Daniel Richter places deliberately ambiguous figures, their true identity and sex apparently unimportant. Only the face and a hand rise out of the shadowy darkness, reaching out towards the white shape which is reminiscent of a skull and bones. Daniel Richter’s figurative and occasionally symbolic paintings carry the viewer off into a complex journey through world and time, leaving it to the individual to imagine his own world.
