Pietro Novelli, il Monrealese (Monreale, 1603 – 1647)

Pietro Novelli, il Monrealese (Monreale, 1603 – 1647) - Old Master Paintings

The Holy Family, oil on canvas, 119 x 106 cm, framed

We are grateful to Nicola Spinosa for confirming the authenticity of this painting (letter dated 3 February 2012). According to Prof Spinosa, this painting is an authentic late work by the Sicilian painter, Pietro Novelli. Stylistically and in compositional terms, it exhibits similarities with Novelli’s depiction of the Presentation in the Temple and the Marriage of the Virgin (both in San Matteo, Palermo), which are dated 1647. Even though it is a late work by Novelli, this painting demonstrates the artist’s predilection for naturalistic motifs, which also characterise his early works, evincing influences of Neapolitan painting, particularly the pictures of Ribera. The painting rests on Classical precedents, however. A quality typical of the artist is the use of light: he defines forms and volumes by employing contrasts between light and dark, whilst simultaneously bathing the entire scene in a warm, glowing light.
