Rudolf Wiegmann - Old Master Paintings

(Adensen 1804–1865 Düsseldorf)
View of the Forum Romanum with the Saturn Temple, the Concordia Temple, the Septimius Severus Arch and the Curia Julia,
indistinctly signed lower left: Wiegmann,
oil on canvas, 51 x 78 cm, framed

Following his studies in Göttingen und Darmstadt, the painter, architect, and archaeologist Rudolf Wiegmann spent the years from 1828 to 1832 in Rome, where he immersed himself in the architecture of antiquity and the rediscovered wall paintings at Pompeii and undertook numerous archaeological excavations. The manifold impressions collected in Italy are reflected in Wiegmann’s artistic oeuvre. After his return to Hanover, he increasingly devoted himself to the production of topographical views featuring motifs from Italy. His works are characterised by a meticulous rendering of the monuments captured. In 1835, Wiegmann moved to Düsseldorf, where he held the chair of architecture and perspective at the art academy from 1839 to his death.
