Albert Hertel

Albert Hertel - 19th Century Paintings

(Berlin 1843–1912)
The Saracen tower in the bay of Rapallo, on the reverse several stamps ‘Albert Hertel Nachlass’ [Estate of Albert Hertel],
oil on canvas, 74 x 103 cm, framed, (Rei)

The Torre Saracena in Rapallo was built in 1562 in an attempt to fortify the ligurian coast against the attacks of Mediterranean pirates, especially those of the famous Drawn Sword of Islam, Dragut (1485-1565). The city had indeed already been attacked and destroyed by the ottoman corsair and his crew in July 1549, forcing hundreds of its inhabitants into slavery. These fortified towers are typical of the ligurian coast.
