Lot No. 361

Franz Christoph Janneck

(Graz 1703 – 1761 Vienna)
The Adoration of the Shepherds, oil on copper, 31.5 x 42.5 cm, framed

Franz Christoph Janneck and Georg Platzer, his South-Tyrolean artist friend of almost the same age, were both active in Vienna and worked in a very similar style. They were the chief exponents of elegant genre painting in the German-speaking area. In their best works, both Janneck and Platzer were equal to such French artists as Pater and Lancret. The two of them were Vienna’s artistic figureheads when the Imperial city had risen to become a glamorous European metropolis after Austria’s successful defeat of the Turks. The court, the aristocracy, and the wealthy bourgeoisie provided the material basis for an unparalleled heyday in the arts. If, on account of the ubiquitous patronage of the church, religious subjects prevailed in German and Austrian 18th Century painting, they constituted rare exceptions Janneck’s and Platzer’s art. The present painting is one of Janneck’s most impressive pieces of this genre.
