Lot No. 303

Girolamo Marchesi da Cotignola

(recorded between 1512 and 1550 in Rome)
Christ Carrying the Cross, oil on panel, 20.9 x 42.3 cm (lunette), framed

Provenance: Mrs. H. H. Macay (according to a label on the reverse);

European private collection

Literature: R. Zama, Girolamo Marchesi da Cotignola pittore, catalogo generale, Rimini 2007, scheda 14, p. 100, pl. V. This panel is published in the catalogue raisonné of the artist by Raffaella Zama. She considers the present composition to be a juvenile work by the painter, comparable to the Lamentation of Christ formerly in the Spinelli Collection in Florence (see R. Zama, op. cit. p. 100-101). Christ’s facial features are reminiscent of the Northern influences in the works of Francesco Zaganelli, to whom the painting was previously attributed. Several art historians have suggested that Girolamo Marchesi was active in the workshop of Francesco and Bernardino Zaganelli, which would account for stylistic similarities.
