This is a replica of Adriaen van Ostade’s painting in the Wallace Collection, London. Our painting is probably identical with a composition sold at auction in Amsterdam in 1857 and mentioned by Hofstede de Groot as no. 504C (comp. The Wallace Collection, Catalogue of Pictures, vol. IV, London 1992, p. 256). Dusart, a student and collaborator of Adriaen van Ostade’s, inherited his teacher’s artistic estate and worked through it.
