German painter, c. 1800

Rudolf of Habsburg and the Priest, inscribed at lower centre Rudolphus I. Victoriosus Imperiali..., oil on canvas, 68 x 81 cm, framed.

Numerous legends revolve around Rudolf of Habsburg (1218 - 1291), first sovereign of the dynasty, Holy Roman King and subsequent Emperor, and restorer of the Empire after a lengthy interregnum. The most popular one is the legend about his encounter with a priest, whom Rudolf is said to have met on the former’s way to anoint a sick man, so that the prince dismounted and gave the priest his horse. Schiller used this legend in a poem. Provenance: West German private property.
