Edward Mateusz Römer is a Baltic-German/Polish painter who was born in Volgoda in 1848. His father was a committed socialist politician and painter, and his brother was the sculptor Alfred Izydor Römer. Edward took up painting in Vilnius from an early age, and studied at Dresden’s University of Fine Arts from 1867. This was followed by a period at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich from 1870 onwards. He had his first successes at exhibitions in Krakow and Lwów, but returned to Vilnius in 1878 so that he could open a studio with his brother, Alfred.

He came into wealth as a result of his marriage in 1880, which gave him financial security and independence. This enabled him to focus on his painting; he was a constant presence at exhibitions across France and northern Europe. The present painting is one of Römer’s later pieces, and is a testament to his interaction with the city of Vilnius. It played a special role in his life, both as the site of his first forays into painting and of his own studio from 1878 onwards.
